Here are some highlights of 2024/5
Supervised Afternoon Sessions: We continued our supervised after-school sessions three times a week, with the help of two enthusiastic facilitators. These sessions have proven to be a popular and valuable resource, particularly for younger learners.
Holiday Programs & Workshops: In addition to our regular sessions, we hosted several holiday programs to engage learners during school breaks:
January 2024: High school students participated in computer skills training, collage making, sports, and workshops on chain-saw maintenance and nail manicure techniques.
Mid-Year Break: Two workshops were conducted—one led by The Magpie Collective, focusing on creating beautiful art from recycled plastic bottles, and another with an artist from Heidelberg, where students painted their own artworks under expert guidance.
4th Term: We hosted a workshop with Chris Giffard, where students were introduced to basic Excel skills.
January 2025: We kicked off the year with an exciting workshop on Google Apps (Spreadsheets, Slides, and Documents), led by an experienced computer skills teacher. We are very grateful to Chesslin who donated breadrolls for the participants lunches during the workshop.
Newsletter 2026.1 - January 2026
As we reflect on 2025, we would like to share with you some of our activities over the past year as well as some of our plans for 2026.
We ended the year on a high note where the the learners celebrated with at a Christmas party. They each enjoyed a meal of KFC, what a treat! What truly stood out at the end of the meal, was when each child, unprompted, expressed their sincere appreciation to our facilitators, Amelia and Anneline, for their dedication, hard work and commitment to accommodate each child’s individual needs and wants. Their care and patience continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the learners, and for that we are truly grateful. And yes…everyone passed!
2026 got off to a great start – everyone has returned with big intentions and renewed enthusiasm.
Firstly, our program has moved to the Vredesaal – there is much more space there and it is very close to where the bus drops the learners off in the afternoon. We look forward to expanding into this Community space.
In their first session for the year, the learners took part in a creative workshop where they enjoyed the afternoon creating collages, painting and having a fun time!
This week the real work begins…
We have three learners who will be writing Matric this year. They are very determined to make a success of this year, and we will assist them wherever we can. To this effect we have secured the services of a Maths Tutor who will be giving them online lessons on a weekly basis. We hope to expand on this process and extend the lessons to learners in other grades as well.
With your ongoing support, we are excited to continue this program, building on its successes and going from strength to strength.
One of our facilitators, Amelia Beukes has been studying part time to get her Early Childhood Development Diploma. She is embarking on her final year in 2026 in order to attain this diploma. We wish her well with her studies.
